Social Consciousness and Responsibility– The Contract Farmer Success Story

Mission Biofuels India Pvt Ltd has recorded tremendous success over the past 3 years by planting over 300,000 acres of Jatropha Curcas. How is this done? By partnering with poor farmers and with the view to alleviate poverty, the over 30,000 farmers grow this incredible plant in marginalised land of their landholdings.

In this manner, Mission is contributing to sustainable and socially responsible use of the world’s marginalized lands thereby helping to improve the lives of the impoverished rural population, conserve biodiversity, reduce carbon emissions and build local and global food security. As a long-term source of fuel, Jatropha will also deliver a much needed income stream to the farmers and their families.

Being a non-edible oil which does not compete with the other foodcrops of the world gives Jatropha cultivation the edge to contribute towards global energy security. The high yielding perennial plant and the oil that it produces will especially be beneficial to the economically disadvantaged regions and peoples.

Mission works with small farmers across diverse regions of India, assisting them to plant Jatropha on the underutilized portions of their land by providing them with agricultural inputs, ongoing support services through our extensive network and crop purchasing guarantees.

Cutting-edge research – high yield, low cost biodiesel

Mission’s partnership and association with highly regarded and recognized institutions such as The Energy and Resources Institute and the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University are very important for agri-technologies that ensure higher yields per acre with earlier gestation periods.

Together with our in-house agricultural scientists, this relationship provides for an array of specialties from high yield breeding techniques to gene mapping, root systems study and irrigation requirements to weeding and such.
Mission is deeply committed and has invested in research and development for efficient processes that will produce high quality biodiesel at a low cost. We have established our own nurseries and seed procurement focal points across India and this allows for the best of saplings to be transplanted at the farmers locale.

Space-age GPS-ERP Technology and the Jatropha Farmer

Technology has touched the lives of people even in remote areas of India and our farmers can be proud of it. With ever increasing acreages of land under Jatropha cultivation and the increasing numbers of farmers joining our bandwagon , it is crucial that information technology be customized for planning, managing and scheduling operations to obtain optimum results. Mission has developed a customized ERP solution for effective and efficient agronomic processes, to track payments and loan facilities.

Constant monitoring of the areas under Jatropha requires more than just human interaction with the plants. To effectively map the area, satellite coordinates for each farm enables all farm data to be relayed and entered into the ERP system to further enhance farm extension services, field staff engagement with farmers, rapid problem solving and rectification and planting, harvesting and seed collection logistics. This will ensure that field representatives are in regular visitation rounds to keep and enhance farmer relationship.

Sustainable Biodiesel – Growing the Future via the 3Fs (Food+Fuel+Forest)

Mission sustainability office run by our Chief Sustainability Officer, is fully cognizant of the era of diminishing resources, ever increasing demand for energy and climate change. We, therefore, lead the industry in sustainable energy generation by recognizing at the core of our values, the need to balance between the 3Fs.  By doing so, we aim to maintain and enhance local food production, conserve biodiversity and environmental values and provide for economic sustenance.

As an organization we are active members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, we implement and monitor Mission’s comprehensive Sustainability Best Management Practices in accordance with the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact. Of late, we have also been active with a German initiative that will become a meta-standard or sustainable biodiesel production called the ISCC. This will further enhance Mission’s eligibility to market biodiesel from sustainable sources.
